∙ Artist’s statement
One of the best things Chun has learnt from ceramics practices is that everything is connected in a very subtle way.
Chun started creating ceramics works with references from his 10 years-experience in photography. He uses urban subjects that he used to in photography to make sculptures in clay.
He forms ambiguous shapes with the existing spaces in the Hong Kong which he has been living for more than 20 years, just as he took black and white photos of the lines and planes composing a complicated jungle of modern world.
He works with moulding and casting life size objects, yet revealing the positive and negative shapes, also the hints of the making process, with the fingerprints and cracks not hiding from the scene, as an attempt to connect himself with the cityscape. His more obvious interaction with the urban world than of the photography inspired him of the connection of things: from the clay he uses, to the land that the city has built and further to the local culture and himself as a human being.
Chun tries to employ a humble approach portraying Hong Kong with the most basic and simple material, namely clay, with the goal of a new perspective towards the living spaces we once felt indifferent.
